Per qué "New West"? (From Sa Pobla To Nebraska; part two)

Com sabeu, la cançó "New West" (vídeo a continuació), que va ser enregistrada a Sa Congregació (Sa Pobla) durant el concert de Tin Hat al Waiting For Waits 2005, fou escullida melodia de fons pel  tràiler oficial de NEBRASKA (film d´Alexander Payne que opta a 6 Oscars). 

La canción "New West" del tráiler oficial de NEBRASKA fue grabada durante el concierto que el grupo Tin Hat ofreció en Sa Congregació (Sa Pobla) dentro de la programación del Waiting For Waits 2005.

 

New West sona en el seu moment àlgid (maravellosa la trompeta d´Ara Anderson) durant la pel.lícula just quan Woody & David Grant, a bord del seu Subaru ("jap car" que diuen els infames cosins de David), arriben a l´Estat de Nebraska

En el momento en el que los Grant (padre e hijo) llegan al Estado de Nebraska, es cuando se oye el tema "New West" en su máximo esplendor (con la maravillosa trompeta de Ara Anderson)

Orphans Of Waits va demanar a Mark Orton (líder de Tin Hat i compositor de tota la banda sonora de Nebraska) per qué va escullir "New West"?. Aquí teniu la resposta:

to be clear, the trailer company chooses the music and "new west" figures prominently in the soundtrack (both during the film and the end credits)

i think one of the reasons that the music works well in the film is that it has both a sense of adventure and a sense of eccentricity - this matches up the don-quixote-like quest of the main character

it was important for the director that the score not be too overtly americana - so i think the fact that "new west" has a nebulous ethnicity made it good for the soundtrack

lastly i'd say that this music has a kind of forward motion in it that goes well with the idea of a road film-  it simply feels like hitting the open road

Avui fa anys Alexander Payne (10/01/1961; Omaha-Nebraska, EUA) que com vos deia fa uns dies va tenir l´exquisit gust de triar a Mark Orton (líder de Tin Hat) com a compositor de la banda sonora de la seva darrera pel.lícula: Nebraska.

Quan l´any 2002 vaig riure pels colsos amb l´interpretació de Jack Nicholson a About Schmidt, mai hagués pensat que el director d´aquella pel.lícula acabaria tenguent un vincle directe amb Waiting For Waits a través d´una cançó de Tin Hat...

Abundant en l´enorme satisfacció de que tan el trailer oficial com la banda sonora de Nebraska (nominada a sis Oscars) inclou el tema "New West" gravat a Sa Congregació el novembre del 2005, a continuació podeu llegir una simpàtica correspondència de Mark Orton i un recull d´anècdotes prèvies a aquella màgica actuació de Tin Hat a Sa Pobla:

i wanted to send a couple of cd's your way - let me know a good mailing address for you

they are the soundtrack cd's for NEBRASKA (a recent feature film i scored that won best actor at cannes and is nominated for a bunch of oscars)

the score includes a couple of tin hat tracks including a live one from the last Mallorca show (from Foreign Legion) entitled New West

the rest of the score is composed by me though tin hat members are part of the group of players (including original member Rob Burger on a couple tracks)

i can also send hi-res mp3's if you like

and i would love to include a cd for the engineer (referint-se a Xisco Vich) who helped record the show - are you still in touch with him?

Congratulations Mark, and good luck on the Oscar awards night!

ANÈCDOTES WFW: no tot fou color de rosa en aquell debut a Espanya de Tin Hat i primera de les seves dues actuacions a Mallorca (tornaríen el novembre del 2010 per jubilar el cicle Waiting For Waits)...

Dos dies abans, Xocolat només havia venut 13 ó 14 entrades anticipades. Recordo telefonar mot preocupat a Pep Crespí (impulsor de l´entranyable i supervivent Mallorca JAZZ  Sa Pobla, que no olvideu enguany cumpleix 20 edicions): 
"Pep: vé un grup d´una qualitat extraordinària i només serem 30 ó 40 espectadors. Serà una autèntica llàstima…i un suicidi econòmic!”.

Per sort a l´on demà José Miguel López de Discópolis (Radio 3), a qui havia enviat una còpia del fabulós disc ->Book Of Silk<- de Tin Hat, va dedicar bona part del programa a comentar el gran interés del concert que havia de tenir lloc a Sa Pobla.

Automàticament es va disparar la venda d´entrades (amb un iva del 7%...), i amb això i l´ajuda de l´ajuntament pobler, que va incloure el concert dins el calendari de la Fira de Tardor 2005, vam poder “salvar la pell” en termes econòmics...

Encara no he anat a veure Nebraska (el cine i els concerts disfruten ara d´un iva anticultural del 21%), però estic molt content per Mark Orton, líder de Tin Hat i compositor de la banda sonora d´aquest film. Era una bellíssima persona i, junt amb els seus acompanyants (Carla Kihlstedt, Ara Anderson i Ben Goldberg) va protagonitzar aquell novembre del 2005  la segurament vetlada més màgica dels 10 anys que va durar l´espera a Tom Waits.

I més notícies cinematogràfiques amb cert vincle al Waiting For Waits:
Com segurament sabeu, ahir vespre Josh Rouse, participant al WFW 2004 també amb una actuació a Sa Congregació (llegir ->AQUÍ), va rebre un goya a la millor cançó per "Do You really Want To Be In Love?"

Confés que he perdut interés pels darrers treballs d´aquest senyor que du anys afincat a València... 
Enyor moltíssim l´estil dels primers discs de Josh Rouse: els elepés Dressed Up Like un altre pic Nebraska (1998) i Home (2000) així com el deliciós ep Chester (1999) gravat amb Kurt Wagner (líder de Lambchop).

Així que vos deixo amb un temasso del disc Home, que recordo amb nostalgia haver ballat a la sala Camden Dingwalls l´any 2000, hores després d´haver entrevistat telefònicament a Josh per un fanzine musical que s´havia de dir Swordfishtrombones però que mai va veure la llum...(ja vos n´havia parlat ->AQUÍ).

La cançó es diu "Directions", i un any després de publicar-se Home també seria inclosa a la banda sonora de la pel.lícula Vanilla Sky

From Sa Pobla To Nebraska

Una gran notícia pel sector cinèfil d´ Orphans Of Waits:

Al trailer oficial que molts ja haureu vist de la pel.lícula Nebraska (s´estrena avui a Espanya), de l´interessant i elegant Alexander Payne, sona el tema "New West" que Tin Hat va gravar amb l´ajuda de Xisco Vich a Sa Congregació durant el seu concert al Waiting For Waits 2005, i que es va publicar anys després al disc Foreign Legion
