Rain Dogs vs Tough/Green Dogs + logo guanyador del WOMEN don´t WAIT

Avui, 30 de setembre, fa 30 anys se publicava un dels discs més significatius de l´història musical contemporania:

Contrariament al que molts pensavem quan varem descubrir aquest discarro, el tipo de portada no és Tom Waits. Com bé sap Jaume Rebassa (lector habitual del bloc i comanager de Toni Monserrat Inc.) la foto d´Anders Petersen retrata a Rose i Lily, dins la sèrie de personatges gatons que habitaven dins el Café Lehmitz (proper al mític Reeperbahn d´Hamburg) a finals dels 60.

Durant els anys d´espera a Tom Waits a Mallorca, si no record malament se varen interpretar aquestes versions de cançons del disc Rain Dogs:

"Time"- Jenifer Jackson (Waiting For Waits 2002, amb ajuda de Marc Melià, llavors a El Diablo En el Ojo, als teclats)

"Hang down your head" - la gran LISA GERMANO (cap de cartell WFW 2003) a qui si tot va bé tendrem el juliol del 2016 al nou cicle musical WOMEN Don´t WAIT

 

"Clap Hands" - Hugo Race (2003 i 2006).

TOUGH/GREEN DOG:

Un dels músics que va participar tan en la gravació com en la gira de RAIN DOGS va ser MARC RIBOT (guitarra en 7 dels 19 temes).

Ribot va participar (de mala gana?) en el cicle Waiting For Waits ("I gave up waiting for Waits" me deia quan el deixava a l´hotel després de recullir-lo a l´aeroport) l´any 2006.

Mesos abans, un dels membres de TIN HAT ja m´havia advertit:  "I´ve heard he is a TOUGH dog to hang around with..."

A més de "tough dog", era més raro que un ca verd (green dog).

Això sí: excepcional guitarrista, a pesar de la brutal estampida de gent que va fugir del seu experimental concert al Teatre Xesc Forteza.

Anècdota: la primera vegada que vaig "conversar" amb Marc Ribot va ser al Jazz Cafe de Londres l´any 2000 just abans del seu concert amb els Cubanos Postizos. presentant el disc Muy Divertido. Mentres me firmava càratules de discs, entre elles obviament la del Rain Dogs, li vaig demanar "how come you write with your left hand and play guitar with your right hand?". La seva resposta, crec recordar: "now you´ll understand my guitar style!". Geni i figura...

D´altra banda, aprofitant tan significativa data, sortejam dues invitacions més entre lector(e)s que mos deixeu un comentari al bloc (o enviant un correu a orphans.of.waits@gmail.com) esmentant quina és la vostra cançó preferida del Rain Dogs i per qué. N´hi ha per triar...i és molt mal de fer triar!

Aprofitant l´imminent visita a Palma del llegendari GRAHAM PARKER, acompanyat de Brinsley Schwarz (sí, sí: el guitarrista dels Rumour!), dedicam l´entrada d´avui a l´aniversari de l´obra mestra que va significar el debut de l´autor britànic, publicada el juliol del 76.

El blues d´una dona feliç (For The Sake Of Mary)

Avui és l´aniversari de la gran, grandíssima Lucinda Gayle Williams (26/01/1953; Lake Charles - Louisiana).

Happy Birthday, Southern Woman!

El passat 14 de gener va surtir publicada una fantàstica  re-edició del seu disc homònim i tercer de la seva carrera (Lucinda Williams, original de l´any 1988). Així que vos podeu imaginar amb quina ansietat obro cada dia la bústia per veure si ja ha arribat la meva còpia...

Però el que realment m´agradaria es que algun dia es re-edités amb tots els extres possibles el seu segon treball, que sense ser el millor, continua sent el meu favorit: Happy Woman Blues (1980).

I supòs que és el meu favorit en gran part per un tema que vaig incloure fa prop de dos anys a un cd-pirata llençat pel "segell" Orphans Of Waits on tot eren temes on es parlava de Marys i Maríes (un altre dia vos contaré l´història d´aquest cd, que tenia per títol For The Sake Of Mary).

ANÈCDOTA #1: sempre he trobat que a Toni Monserrat (Inc.) li pega molt gravar una versió de "Maria"...i encara millor si es fa acompanyar de la veu d´alguna Maria. De manera que fa ja més d´un any el vaig posar en contacte amb Mary B. Lorson (ex- Madder Rose i ex-Saint Low, actualment Mary Lorson & The Soubrettes) per que en fessin la pertinent gravació...

ANÈCDOTA #2: quan Lucinda Williams va oferir l´any 2009 els seus primers concerts a Espanya, vam enviar un correu al seu agent europeu per veure si es podia contemplar una data a Mallorca. La resposta fou: "not until there is a bridge!". Sembla que na Lucinda, com tans altres artistes ianquis que venen ben poquet a Europa, pateix una mica dins un avió...
