"Clap Hands" - Hugo Race (2003 i 2006).

_______________

TOUGH/GREEN DOG:

Mesos abans, un dels membres de TIN HAT ja m´havia advertit:  "I´ve heard he is a TOUGH dog to hang around with..."

Mentres me firmava càratules de discs, entre elles obviament la del Rain Dogs, li vaig demanar "how come you write with your left hand and play guitar with your right hand?". La seva resposta, crec recordar: "now you´ll understand my guitar style!". Geni i figura...

VÍDEO "BLIND LOVE" (TOM WAITS; 1985 - RAIN DOGS)

Now you're gone, it's hotels and whiskey and sad-luck dames
And I don't care if they miss me, I never remember their names
They say if you get far enough away, you'll be on your way back home
Well, I'm at the station, and I can't get on the train
Must be blind love
Only kind of love is stone blind love
Blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love
Oh, it's blind love
Stone blind love
It's your stone blind love
Now the street's turning blue, the dogs are barking and the night has come
And there's tears that are falling from your blue eyes now
I wonder where you are
And I whisper your name
The only way to find you is if I close my eyes
I'll find you with my blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love
Oh, your blind love
Your stone blind love
It's your blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
Stone blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
With your blind love
The only kind of love is stone blind love
Stone blind love
Stone blind love

WOMEN For Waits (part two: 2006-2007)

"In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman."
Margaret Thatcher

(again, Maggie was sometimes right...)

8 MARÇ - DIA INTERNACIONAL DE LES DONES

If you want to check WOMEN For Waits part one (Waiting For Waits 2010, 2009 & 2008) you can click ->HERE<-

1) Dayna Kurtz  - WFW2007 (x 2)

Dues vegades va actuar a Palma l´any 2007, i les dues va penjar el cartell de "sold-out".

If I Go First, DAYNA KURTZ ("Rise and Fall" - 2015)
official video by Louie Ludwig

2) Josephine Foster  - WFW2007

3) Marissa Nadler  - WFW2007

Va actuar al Claustre del Convent de Muro  el juliol de 2007, telonejant Bill Elm/Friends Of Dean Martinez.

anècdota 1: doble concert per olvidar, en el que després de no dormir vaig enviar un mailing demanant disculpes als assistents...si en voleu una còpia crec que en Simó Vall (guitarrista de Toni Monserrat Inc., Murder In The Barn i BB Sin Sed) encara el guarda;

video #3 - "Drive" (Marissa Nadler; 2014)

4) Lisa Germano  - WFW2006

video #4  "Lullaby For Liquid Pig" (Lisa Germano; 2003)

video #5 "Crackling Water" (OP8 feat. Lisa Germano; 1997)

5) Jesca Hoop  - WFW2006

video #8  "Blame It On My Family"

NOTA FINAL:

Neal Casal interview + Folk You! (la génesi del Waiting For Waits)

setembre/september 2000:

TIME OUT - London

"Described by The Washington Post as "One of the best new songwriters of the year", Neal Casal is back at The Borderline (20th September) following his successful gig in May, promoting his new album, 'Anytime Tomorrow'"

english / català

September 2000: at The Borderline (Soho- London) a part-time box-office attendant was required...
La tardor de l´any 2000, a una petita sala del Soho londinenc anomenada The Borderline hi havia penjat un fol amb el reclam: "PART TIME JOB - Box Office Attendant".

After buying a ticket for Neal Casal´s show (taking place the 20th September) I got a job that would last for about five years.

That precise moment was the starting point of the Majorcan music event Waiting For Waits (so thank you Neal and thank you The Borderline!).
En aquell moment es va sembrar, sense saber-ho, la llavor del Waiting For Waits (així que gràcies Neal Casal i gràcies The Borderline!).

WAITING FOR WAITS vs FOLK YOU!

In fact, because of a sticker that Neal Casal had on his acoustic guitar (actually a patch, as Neal mentions in the interview below), Waiting For Waits could have been named Folk You! instead...

NEAL CASAL INTERVIEW (english)

- Are you aware that you were somehow responsible for the beginning of Waiting for Waits? (you know the story…)

It's amazing to think that I was an integral part of this festival that we all loved so much. It´s quite an honor for me to know that.

- We almost gave the festival a different name: Folk You!, because of the sticker you had in your acoustic guitar that night you played in London fourteen years ago today!. Where did you get that sticker?

It's actually not a sticker but a patch, which I never sewed onto anything. I would just attach it to my guitar strap with a safety pin!!  I bought  that patch in a small vintage shop on Avenue A in the east village, New York City, in 1993. That patch has stayed with me for over 20 years, it's one of my prized possessions!.

- What are your memories of your shows in Mallorca (first in 2003 with lovely Lisa Germano, and the following year sharing the bill with the great Chris Eckman)?

It was incredible and such an honor for me to discover Mallorca, it felt like entering a different world. The shows were always in really nice locations, the audiences were enthusiastic and attentive, and to share the stage with talents such as Lisa and Chris was just amazing.

- When did you discover Tom Waits? Which album? We have fond memories of the song cover you played using Lisa Germano´s electric guitar: "On the nickel"...
I'm not exactly sure what the first record was, maybe Nighthawks At The Diner. It just seemed to me that his music was always everywhere y'know?
But it was Heart Attack And Vine that really changed my life. That was the record that turned me into a Waits fanatic.

- Do you still keep that Neil Young HARVEST t-shirt that I gave you? It certainly looked better on you than on me!
Of course I still have it, it's in the same drawer as my Folk You patch!

- Today we celebrate yet another anniversary related to Neal Casal: Leaving Traces (1994-2004 compilation; Fargo records) was released 10 years ago (20th September 2004).
After a solid 20 years solo career and your collaborations with some "big" names: what´s your own album you´re most proud of? Own song?. And collaboration?

I think Roots And Wings is my strongest collection of songs,

but I guess Sweeten The Distance is my favorite overall record. "White Fence Round House" is one of my favorite of my own songs.
As for collaborations, the new Chris Robinson Brotherhood record Phosphorescent Harvest is definitely my favorite.

- Last question: RUDY SESSIONS, who recently booked Graham Parker to play in Palma, would be interested in having you back to Mallorca. What about that, Neal?
Wow, that is so exciting, thank you for thinking of me again!. The idea if coming back to Mallorca is just amazing to me, can´t even believe it!

Next: video of Neal Casal playing his own favourite song two years ago at The Borderline backstage!

Blood shot eyes in the morning
Wait to the day with a memory in my mind
A plane touches down and I can see those street lights
A plane touches down and I know it's time to fly
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave behind

It's so cold here in the evening
Wait till the dark that I've done my fire right
I feel such a fool and just keep waiting
I feel such a fool cause I know I still hope to find
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave
But I want you to take your time
Think it over
Stay a while, till
...taking me easy way out, easy way out

Star close the night, set the candle
Everybody frightened, it's the whole damn place alive
Come from all the father's preachers
Everybody looking for something, I hope they can find
One thing they can't leave behind
One thing they can't leave

Eyes fall open with the first...
Make my way down to the ocean burning...
Each day I'm constantly in a falling
Each day the current pulls me closer down to you
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave behind
One thing I can't leave
But I want you to take your time
Think it over
Stay a while, till
Just remember to take your time
and think it over
Stay a while, ill it shows
You're not taking the easy way out, easy way out
Not taking the easy way out
I can show you the easy way down

Blood shot eyes in the morning
Wait to the day with a memory in my mind

WOMEN For Waits (part one: 2008 -2010)

"Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't."
Margaret Thatcher (buuuf!)

(idò qualque vegada tenia raó, que voleu que vos digui...
to be honest, Maggie was sometimes right...)

2) Dayna Kurtz - WFW2010, 2007 i 2004

vídeo-audio #2 el preciós tema de Dayna "Love Gets In The Way":

i've made love with one eye on the door
i've left good rooms with nothing to say
i wanted to love them
but love got in the way
i wanted to love them
but love gets in the way
and so what if everything's changed
and so what if i've held out for more
i'm all wild in places i wasn't before
i'm wild in places where i wasn't before
so come on and make a mess of me
i won't walk away
i'm ready as i'll ever be
i won't walk away
i want to be fed by you
i want to be led by you
i thought i wanted freedom
but love got in the way
i went looking for freedom
but love got in the way
so come on and make a mess of me
i won't walk away
i'm ready as i'll ever be
i won't walk away

3) Elana James (cantant i violinista de Hot Club Of Cowtown) WFW2009

Eren gent encantadora...

vídeo #3: H.C.O.C. interpretant "Long Way Home" de Tom Waits:

4) Jolie Holland - WFW 2009

Jack and Edie lying across my bed
Flying high like the spirits of the dead
The living and the dead, the living and the dead
Our Lady of Sorrows and the long dark night
How many candles could I light
For the living and the dead, the living and the dead?
What's that black smoke rising Jack, is the world on fire?
What's that distant singing, is it a heavenly choir?
Of the living and the dead, the living and the dead
I think about you Jack watching the TV
And drinking booze, shame on you, shame on me
But how can we help it there was no where else to go
I sent Julie and Billy out on that long hard road
On that long hard road, on that long hard road
I'm just back from Mexico city
I came back north to Texas to rest my weary head
My true love is fresh from the battle field
Sewing up the dying and carting off the dead
My baby don't stand no fighting amongst the living or the dead
What's that black smoke rising Jack, is the world on fire?
What's that distant singing, is it a heavenly choir?
Of the living and the dead, the living and the dead
The living and the dead, the living and the dead
The living and the dead, the living and the dead

5) Dawn Landes - WFW2008

(sorry Dawn: didn´t find the lyrics on internet!; if you want to provide them you can email us. good luck with the new album!)

pd-lletres de Bluebird a la secció comentaris!

6) Devon Sproule - WFW2008

Cole (veure www)

vídeo (#6) Devon Sproule amb el seu marit Paul Curreri al show the Jools Holland interpretant el meu tema favorit del seu repertori: "Old Virginia Block"

If my ears hear a sigh of a shiny red violin
Clear by the Rivanna, down in the Blue Ridge.
By the dog bags and trash, by the bottles and cans
And the dead beat brown grass
and the red dirt in the Blue Ridge
Then my home must be around another good old Virginia block.

If my ears hear a note on the cello, so low, then a double stopping bow,
from my headphones, in the Blue Ridge.
Out walking at noon, appearing under the white of the daytime moon,
keeping my big blue balloon in my tight fist, in the Blue Ridge.
Then my home must be around another good old Virginia block.

If my ears hear the sound of a slate rock on the ground,
clicking the drops of the rain coming down, along a front walk, in the Blue Ridge
The rim of dirt on the brim of a brow, the skin of sweat on the handle of a plow,
Miles and miles of tobacco in the south, from a back road, in the Blue Ridge
Then my home must be around another good old Virginia block.

I've got family in Canada, family in New York
I've got friends in every other place I've played
But I can't keep from planting all my plans of family stuff
Down between the weeds in the red dirt clay

And where my ears hear a hundred bees riding that upwarding breeze,
a veil and a bucket by a pair of oak trees,
just another blond kid, in the Blue Ridge.
It's all to make a pattern of love, to roost a lava field of white doves,
with just a pitch fork and a pair of thick gloves,
for your whole life, in the Blue Ridge
The pick up and go - the bent back and the grunt-chucked coal,
The gleam of your white underclothes, in the back seat, in the Blue Ridge
The pile of bacon by a couple fried eggs, kiss marks and hearts on a picnic table leg,
The quartet fretting on up in my head, on my long walk, through the Blue Ridge.
And my home comes up around another good old Virginia block.

7) Eilen Jewell - WFW2008

You picked up a broken bottle
In case anyone gave us any trouble
And we walked all the way back to Cortez

You sang help me dear doctor
At the top of your lungs
You'd been soaking up drink like a sponge

Little boy down the street
We all heard you mournfully
Call again and again for Roberta
Roberta…

The mountain towns burned red
Consumed by a sunset
I'd be happy disappearing under colors like that

And I fell in love with trains,
Haunted by the old refrain
You ride the Southern, I'll ride the Santa Fe
Santa Fe…

It was wrong of me to leave
'Cause I couldn't stand a perfect thing
But I was too young to know any better

And I'd give the world if it were mine
To let these memories slip my mind
And wake up next to you one more time
One more time…

Segona entrega al 2015:  Josephine Foster, the one and only Lisa GermanoJesca Hoop, etc...
